Jab to the body

Mechanics / Hands / Shadow

A level change through the legs and a straight lead hand at rib height.

Jab to the body: the Jab to the body at the Extend to the ribs phase, the lead hand goes out straight at rib height with the elbow under the fist, the shoulder covering the jaw.
Rendered from the same model the player uses. Solo study.

Legs take the height

  1. Bend the knees, not the back.
  2. The rear hand comes down with the chin.
  3. Hand back first, then stand up.

Why it matters

A jab to the body changes the height of the whole athlete, not the height of the hand. Done from the legs it keeps the head covered; done from the waist it puts the head in front of everything.

Walk through it

  1. GuardSame guard, same feet
  2. Level changeKnees bend, chin comes down with the body, rear hand with the chin
  3. Extend to the ribsStraight, elbow under the fist, shoulder covering the jaw
  4. RecoverHand back, then stand up through the legs

Common faults

Drill

3 rounds of 2 min, 45 s rest. 8 body jabs a round alternated with 8 head jabs, to feel the level change

Rehearse, then reflect

Open the visual study to see the movement from four cameras. Start slowly using the movement taught by your coach, pause between repetitions and keep the range comfortable. Add the study to a session when you want a timed block, and record one useful observation afterward.
