Lead uppercut
Mechanics / Hands / Shadow
Dip on the lead side, drive up the middle, short and in front of your own chin.

From the legs, not the arm
- Dip through the knees and let the lead shoulder drop a few inches.
- The legs and the lead hip lift the fist; the arm is short.
- Rear hand on the jaw all the way through.

Why it matters
The uppercut is the punch most people throw with the arm. Watching the dip and the rise from the side camera shows where it really comes from.
Walk through it
- GuardLead fist by the cheek, knees soft
- Dip on the lead sideThe knees give, the shoulder drops, the hand stays close
- Drive upThe legs and the hip lift the fist up the middle
- RecoverHand back to the cheek first
Common faults
- Scooping from the hipIf the glove drops below the ribs it is a swing
- Straight legsThe dip is in the knees; watch them bend at phase two
- Rear hand dropsThe rear glove stays on the jaw
Drill
3 rounds of 2 min, 45 s rest. 8 slow lead uppercuts a round, pausing at the dip
Solo study: no partner, no contact, not verified by a coach. Rehearse a movement your coach has already shown you.
The movements inside it
- Boxing guard: Set the feet, Hands home, Check balance, Ready. Watch for: Avoid bringing the feet onto one tightrope.
- Lead uppercut: Guard, Dip on the lead side, Drive up, Recover. Watch for: The fist swings from the hip like a scoop. If the glove passes below the ribs it is not an uppercut.
Where it sits
Mechanics: One punch at a time, slowed down: where the heel, the hip and the elbow are at the moment it lands.
Other studies in this tier: Cross / return to guard, Lead hook / recover, Rear hook, Jab to the body, Lead hook to the body.
Sessions that use it: One punch at a time.
Rehearse, then reflect
Open the visual study to see the movement from four cameras. Start slowly using the movement taught by your coach, pause between repetitions and keep the range comfortable. Add the study to a session when you want a timed block, and record one useful observation afterward.
