Jab to the body
Mechanics / Hands / Shadow
A level change through the legs and a straight lead hand at rib height.

Legs take the height
- Bend the knees, not the back.
- The rear hand comes down with the chin.
- Hand back first, then stand up.

Why it matters
A jab to the body changes the height of the whole athlete, not the height of the hand. Done from the legs it keeps the head covered; done from the waist it puts the head in front of everything.
Walk through it
- GuardSame guard, same feet
- Level changeKnees bend, chin comes down with the body, rear hand with the chin
- Extend to the ribsStraight, elbow under the fist, shoulder covering the jaw
- RecoverHand back, then stand up through the legs
Common faults
- Bending at the waistThe hips drop; they do not fold. Watch the back stay long
- Head hangs forwardChin stays down and the eyes stay up
- Rear hand left behindThe rear glove follows a chin that is moving
Drill
3 rounds of 2 min, 45 s rest. 8 body jabs a round alternated with 8 head jabs, to feel the level change
Solo study: no partner, no contact, not verified by a coach. Rehearse a movement your coach has already shown you.
The movements inside it
- Boxing guard: Set the feet, Hands home, Check balance, Ready. Watch for: Avoid bringing the feet onto one tightrope.
- Jab to the body: Guard, Level change, Extend to the ribs, Recover. Watch for: Bending at the waist to reach the body leaves the head hanging forward. Watch the hips: they drop, they do not fold.
Where it sits
Mechanics: One punch at a time, slowed down: where the heel, the hip and the elbow are at the moment it lands.
Other studies in this tier: Cross / return to guard, Lead hook / recover, Rear hook, Lead uppercut, Lead hook to the body.
Sessions that use it: One punch at a time.
Rehearse, then reflect
Open the visual study to see the movement from four cameras. Start slowly using the movement taught by your coach, pause between repetitions and keep the range comfortable. Add the study to a session when you want a timed block, and record one useful observation afterward.
